Take Better Pictures of Your Kids! | Minot, ND Photographer

Today’s Tip:

Real Connections.  Sometimes the best photographs are the ones that aren’t planned and aren’t posed.  The best photographs leave the viewer with a connection to the subject, the story, and the scene.  You can ‘help’ this along a bit by a little staging.  Set up your child in a clutter free area with some of his favorite toys.  Play a little bit and interact with him, leave the camera behind you for a while.  Once he’s engrossed in his play, slowly take out your camera and snap some pictures. Take some from different angles, from top looking down, from down looking up, etc…be ready for when he looks up and snap quickly.  This is a great idea if you want some memories for your child of his or her favorite toys (that train set he got for Christmas, or the doll house she got from grandma).

Letters to My Children | February 2014

Dear Children,

February has been a long month.  Not much outside play time, the weather has been snowy and cold.  When we have time, we will head over to the local pizza place that offers a play area and bouncy castles, or to the play area in the mall, but nothing is a substitute for the great outdoors.  We are all longing for the green grass of summer, the warm breezes and the extended days.  Instead, we get snow and more snow.:) Hopefully the weather will improve a bit and the area’s lakes will have some fish biting, because soon we are heading out to do some ice fishing.

Dear Son – This month marked the transition to the big boy bed.  We figured that since you were practically jumping out of your crib, it may be time to take down the rails.  😀  And even now with the toddler ‘daybed’, I think we may even need to move you over to a bigger bed soon!  You are almost done with naps too, we suspect.  While you still have naps at school, when you are at home, you sleep much better at night without one.

You are getting into watching sports on TV…although to you, everything is hockey…I wonder what that means?  You are the son of a Canadian, so I am sure it’s part genetics:)

Dear Daughter – we are getting ready to redecorate your bedroom!  You love your toddler bed and we know you don’t want to give it up, but you are much too big for it now.  Soon, we will take you to pick out a big girl bed:) You have already picked out your new bedding and we installed some cool, fun new lights in your room.  Soon it will all come together!

We are headed to AZ next month for some much needed family time, and you both can’t WAIT to fly on a plane and wear SHORTS!:)

Brand New February Baby | Minot Newborn Photographer

This little sweetie was a perfect sleeper from the day she arrived into the world. Until she met me. LOL. While she was happy most of the day, she was also awake. So we did get some ‘awake’ images, which was actually pretty great, because a lot of the time, I capture the deep sleepers only. We made it work just fine, and were able to get some wonderful images:)

Letter to My Children | January 2014

Dear Children,

It’s a new year! This month you BOTH turn a year older.

My Dear Son: you are fiercely gaining your independence.  You want to do everything yourself…get dressed, get a drink, wash your face, shampoo your hair…some of these things you can’t quite master on your own yet, but you’ll be darned if you let anyone help you!  So getting dressed for pre-school in the mornings is a bit of a challenge, to say the least:)

You love telling everyone you are 3.  And you are excited by things that make you stronger and bigger!  (Note to self:  must use this in order to convince you bed time is a ‘good’ thing). 😉

My not-so-little darling daughter:  You have stepped up your Big Sister game this month.  While your little brother has been fighting for independence, you’ve been helping everyone get through it.  Helping him when (if) he asks, getting you BOTH snacks, playing cars and trucks with him (even though you would much rather play with your dolls).

I can see you trying to be like me.  I don’t know if that is a good thing sometimes!  I need to work on being the best mommy I can be so you can go on with your life imitating the good things:)

We go on frequent ‘girls’ days’.  You love to go to the same restaurant just me and you. Then we go shopping:) And if we can swing it, you love a side trip to the movies.:) I cherish these moments, because I know it won’t be long until you would rather be with your friends.

I love you both to the moon and back

~ Mommy
